Your bug report says you have an internal modem, which usually means ttyS2 or 
something.  I'd suggest checking the output of dmesg to confirm where your 
modem is, and then linking that device to /dev/modem.  After that, try 
editing the minicom config file to use /dev/modem.

I do suggest being patient too: wait at least a five minutes before deciding 
that minicom, rather than initialising the modem as it says, has crashed.  
After all, it does tell you what it's trying to do.  But long delays seem to 
be common with all modem software when you have the wrong port, or IRQ 
problems etc, so I would tend to worry about your setup, rather than minicom.  
I haven't used it in years, but it always worked when I got my own stuff 
right ;)
