Just for the archive, I now can record audio. The original poster
forwarded to me a recommendation from another source that he try ALSA
with OSS emulation. I thought I had tried ALSA before, but it worked
fine this time. I use Sarge, which has both ALSA and OSS, and the
startup loads both types of modules, so that might have confused
matters. I don't know if it is necessary, but I put entries in
/etc/modules to load the OSS emulation modules for ALSA, and the other
ALSA modules are all automatically loaded.
