He may be new enough that he doesn't realize which man page to look in.  My
experience is that that is the hardest thing in Unix systems.  Once you know
where to look, you can usually figure stuff out.  Maybe he comes from a DOS
background and figured rmdir == deltree, which is logical.   Although, I don't
even see the -R option to deltree in Debian stable.

rm triva:

% rm -f -i

has different behavior than

% rm -i -f

know why?  Many of you out there do, don't spoil the fun if you knew already.
