hidden symbol `__fini_array_end' in bitmap_test is referenced by DSO

When trying to link programs against glut I keep getting the error:

/usr/bin/ld: bitmap_test: hidden symbol `__fini_array_end' in bitmap_test is referenced by DSO
/usr/bin/ld: final link failed: Nonrepresentable section on output
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [bitmap-test] Error 1


I tried downgrading glut to the version in stable, but it doesn't seem to help.
Any other ideas on what may be causing the problem? (I have managed to compile
without a problem some other programs that don't need glut).
