kernel modules not loaded after dist-upgrade

hi,

i'm using the unstable distribution and with the last dist-upgrade (about 440mb of packages) i chose xorg as replacement for xfree. everything went fine except that it wouldn't start because the mouse was not recognized. just a short nvidia logo and - boom - text console. this was because of the psmouse and mousedev modules not being loaded on bootup. so i placed appropriate entries in /etc/modules but still they don't get loaded on bootup. as a quick fix i created an initscript that is executed as the last on bootup and this script executes module-init-tools and executes kdm. this way it works. what's up with module-init-tools? the symlink in rcS is correct, but module-init-tools doesn't seem to get executed on boot or it is affected by some other error. this upgrade also updated udev (another udev problem once again?) and i removed hotplug like the update process told me.

help appreciated,
oliver
