what is the output of lsmod?
what is the output of lspci -vv?
are you using udev?
what is the output of dmesg after boot?
maybe turn on bootlogging. look at /etc/default/bootlogd.
then after boot look at /var/log/bootlog*
what about not logging into X and using some console audio apps like
ogg123 or play as a normal user.
