Greg,

Run this command as root:

apt-get install mdetect

This will install a program that will help detect and setup your mouse in X 
windows.

Then run this command as root:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

This will then try reconfiguring the desktop and should do the mouse detection 
step again.
