It says it could not detect a compatible sound card,
asks to probe for legacy sound, did not appear to be successful.


It sounds like you do not have the correct module for your soundcard. Which kernel are you running?

I don't have the OS on hand. According to another email I have on hand, the kernel file is vmlinuz-2.4.27-2-686. I believe it's 3.0 r1. Sound right?
