For kernel version you might also like to look at the names of the entries in /boot/. All the same I'm certain I've encountered a command that tells you this - straight from the mouth of the kernel so to speak- but I can't remember what it is. Perhaps I'm remembering a configure.guess file or something like that but that is hardly what you want.
