I love XFCE4, but one bummer is that its session manager doesn't see
firefox, so it won't get restarted automatically when I log in.  The
workaround is to put an executable file in ~/Desktop/Autostart with
the single line:

/usr/bin/mozilla-firefox

this then gets executed on every startup.  But I want to have firefox
start on desktop 3, not on any old desktop.  anyone know an automatic
way to do this?

If you shut down on desktop 3, the session manager returns to desktop 3 on restarting.  So, depending on the timing (I'm not sure when the executables in Autostart get started), firefox will open on desktop 3.  That's kludgy, of course, because you'd like it to do that even if you shut down on desktop 1.
