converting CHM files

I have been working on this for longer than I think I should have. I
have some CHM files that I need to convert for 'reading'. I would use
[x|g|k]chm but I am blind and need to get them into a text buffer or w3m
under emacs. I have installed archmage from the rpm file (it is not in
the deb repository) using alien. I have also installed chmlib,
chmlib-dev, chmlib-bin, mod_python, and the python bindings to chmlib.
I also tried to use the tarball, but there are no instructions on how to
install. Here is the error I am getting:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/archmage", line 8, in ?
    from CHM import *
ImportError: No module named CHM

I am running a sid system, but I have not done an upgrade in better than
a week.

Please help me. If I have to get my girlfriend to convert this on her
w2k box she is gonna make fun of me.

Thanks,

rdc
