fstab mount at boot

I've got an odd problems with a second ide drive. It will not mount at boot. Though I can mount -a and it mounts just fine. My current fstab is /dev/hdg1 /mnt/data ext3 suid, dev, exec 0 0
Though I've tried /dev/hdg1 /mnt/data ext3 defaults 1 2
and all I get for my trouble is fsck gets stuck at boot and makes you hit control+d to continue.

The machine is a proliant dl380 with a ide controller card hooked to a 250g wd hard drive. Running sarge. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Apparently, the system is not ready to see the drive at the time fstab would like to mount it????
