Compiling Kernel for Bootsplash: The Whole Seven Metres. [Solved]

Aha! I got it to work (well, the boot up, any way. I haven't booted down yet. I assume it will work, though).

I thank you all kindly for your help.

(For purposes of completion:)

Bby putting the line
deb-src http://splashy.Alioth.debian.org/debian/ unstable main
into the sources.list file, then, using synaptic, I got the package splashy. Then, I updated menu.list (GRUB) to look like this:

title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.12-1-686
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-1-686 root=/dev/hdc2 ro quiet splash vga=792
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.12-1-686
savedefault
boot
and all works. I have yet to explore other themes, though; nor have I booted down or attempted a verbose boot. I assume all will work nicely.
