Yes. I put a pure64 2.6 on a AMD64 SMP machine with 1 SCSI and 2 SATAs.
The system went on the SCSI, sda. 

When the install was done, the SATAs were at sdb and sdc. From there I
could partition them, mke2fs them, and enter them into fstab.

I've never tried installing to a SATA. 

Since the kernel treats them as SCSI, maybe loading a SCSI module would
help. Or maybe stick an old SCSI controller form the junkbox in a PCI
slot.
