nvidia geforce2 and hard lock-ups

greetings,

I've been working on a debootstrap install of what will ultimately be pure sid on an extra partition. Got a base system up and running with no apparent problems, but when I went for an x-windows system I encountered a serious issue: hard lock-up upon starting x. can't ssh in or anything (yes sshd is running ;P ).

I've googled a lot and found someone with the same problem that was not apparently resolved: http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2004/10/msg00728.html

My problem appears to exactly match his right down to matching xfree86.0.log.

logs and lspci below.

so I know the thing is do-able 'cause I'm using an HD install of knoppix right now and it works great,,, I tried copying over XF86Config-4 from knoppix partitions, but no go. also follow some of Andrew Schueller(?)'s advice on using nvidia instead of nv to no avail. so I'm looking for some direction and help is appreciated.

(meanwhile, gotta redo my debootstrap, errant space-bar-thumb results in rm -rf /etc /X11 instead of rm -rf /etc/X11. oh well ;)

thanks

A

relevant output of lspci:
