A 500 MHz celery with 64 MB RAM will happily run WindowMaker or IceWM or Fluxbox. XFCE and Enlightenment might also be possibilities. The problem you run into is the heavy apps, like Mozilla, Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, and so on. There have been several threads on this list over the last couple of years about choices of apps for low-spec machines.
