re: no desktop
hello,
i'm a newby installing debian for the first time. i've been able to install debian 3.1, however i'm unable to reach the desktop. when i boot up i only get to the text based screen which presents me with a prompt, ( debian login), if i use my user name and password a small software disclaimer comes up next and under that is a second login prompt which ends with a $. no matter what i type i get a command not found? and a prompt again... i've tried various things, such as startx, xstart and so forth. all to no avail. i really would like to learn to use debian thtas why i bought the disk to install it. i hope that someone will take the time to help me out..

ps, i've already registered to the lists forums and haven't recieved any reply's to my plea for help, i was hoping intitially that there was a true community invovled with debian, so far though i'm beginning to wonder about that.
