(Oops - answered directly rather than to group!)

This is a problem with mysql apparently being upgraded to 4.1

I met it a little while ago and all you have to do is change the config 
file /etc/mysql/my.cnf y commenting out the line that says "old_passwords = 
1" which I found on line 48.
