You need a more upto date kernel.  I had the same problem a few days
ago.  I was running on the old woody 2.4.18-bf24 kernel, and moved to
2.6.11 which cured the problem.  Others indicate (and there have been
multiple posts on this subject) that recent 2.4 kernels also work.
