Hi Joe,
I'm sorry I can't help, but I would suggest upgrading to exim4. The
older exim 3.xx is not supported anymore. If you ask on the exim-users
mailing list I am reasonably sure that 'they' would suggest the same
*then* help you.
If you are low on resources (486?) then there are more lightweight
alternatives.
