You can always highlight the URL with your mouse and then middle-click
into the address bar of your preferred browser.
Of course, that solution is a bit clunky.
Chances are that KMail and TBird are paying attention to the Gnome
Control Center settings (I know; KDE and non-Gnome apps paying attention
to Gnome settings seems a bit odd). You might can get to this tool from
the KDE menu under Debian/Apps/System/Gnome/Gnome Control Center.
Another possibility is that these apps are paying attention to the
Debian alternatives system. Do an "ls -l" in "/etc/alternatives"; you're
likely to see something like:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Apr 22 2004 x-www-browser ->
/usr/bin/mozilla-firefox
which in this case indicates that my Debian alternative for a web
browser in X is set to Firefox. This can be changed by running
"update-alternatives".
