Using a 2.6 stock kernel with Virtual PC 7.0.2

Has anyone managed to get a Virtual PC instance on Mac OS X to
boot one of the stock 2.6 kernels? My instance boots up without
issue on a 2.4 kernel, but there's an immediate oops when trying to
use either the current 2.6.8 or 2.6.11 kernels from the repository.
The last lines that display on bootup with a 2.6 kernel are:
[...]
Booting 'Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.11-1.686 '
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11-1-686 root=/dev/hda1 ro
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1600, size=0x12fac0]
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.11-1-686
[Linux-initrd @ 0x1fb78000, 0x477000 bytes'
savedefault
boot
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
_
[...]
At this point the instance pauses and an error dialog is
displayed stating "An unrecoverable processor error has been
encountered. The PC will restart now."
