Thankyou so much Sudev for the detailed reply :-)

actually I got this

--------------------

# sfdisk -a /dev/hda > partitions.firstdisk
sfdisk: invalid option -- a
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

man sfdisk does not show an option "-a". what did you actualy mean??

and this gave me

-------------------

grub> find /grub/stage1

Error 15: File not found

grub>

------------------------------------------------------

any Idea where i could have gone wrong???

Oh! my!! I am typing this as I am doing the thing :-) and I just
guessed something and it worked :-)

----------------

grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
 (hd0,1)
 (hd1,1)

grub>

------------------------------------------------------------

hope I did the rest correctly :-)

------------------------------------

grub> device (hd0) /dev/hdc

grub> root (hd0,1)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0xfd

grub> setup (hd0)

succeeded

Done.

Yes both are working independently with the other unplugged

but I think I wrecked it here :-(

I think the RAID is broken now!!! :-(

-------------------

# cat /proc/mdstat
cat: /proc/mdstat: No such file or directory

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and I find in my dmesg things like :-(

-----------------------------------

md: md1 stopped.
md: bind<hda2>
md: bind<hdc2>
md: kicking non-fresh hda2 from array!
md: unbind<hda2>
md: export_rdev(hda2)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

how do I fix it?????

thankyou so much for your detailed reply again Sudev

kind regards
