When you begin the install (say, of netinst CD) you first hit F2 (I think) to get a list of options. One of those options is to install 2.6.8 rather than 2.4. This may have been changed in more recent install CD's but anyway it should be quite easy for you to upgrade to the 2.6 kernel without reinstalling.
