apt-cache is certainly good. But dpkg kan also display a simple
list. 'dpkg -l' indeed lists only the installed packages, but you can
list other packages as well. For example just do something like 'dpkg
-l q*' to list all packages---installed and uninstalled---beginning
with a q.
