The driver from:

http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html

shouldn't have that problem; the latest version is also available there. 
Alternately, look into using dpkg-divert on the /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 
file; I don't remember the exact incantation, however.
