Remove your session manager (gdm, kdm, xdm etc.) or temporarily disable it by moving or turning off its init script in /etc/init.d Although not responsive to your question, alternatively you can use virtual terminals exit X, with ctl-alt-F1(-F6) and re-enter X using alt-F7(-F12)
