I gave it another shot the past weekend: bought a new harddrive and 
copied the partitions overto non lvm partitions on the new hd, reboot 
went fine. Then i installed a 2.6 kernel and i got the same error. Then 
i noticed the error on /dev/console. Sure enough when i checked 
/dev/console, it wasn't there.
I then rebooted from a rescue cd and copied the /dev links over.
Afterwards the reboot went fine. So somehow, some things in my /dev got 
deleted. I will go back to LVM in the future but root won't be on it.
In addition to /boot, i'll leave / out of LVM.

Anyway, thanks for all who helped me on this.
