I tried that, and now when I start nfs-kernel-server, I get this:

host2:~# /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server restart

Exporting directories for NFS kernel daemon...host1.domain.com:/tmp: Function not implemented
done.

You're not getting the complete picture here, error message-wise.  The
daemons are apparently failing to load for some reason.  There may be
some verbosity flag that you could use while manually restarting the daemons,
but beyond that I am not familiar with kernel nfs, so somebody else will have
to assist you, or else you could try user-mode nfs, at least as a test.
