Ah! well I confess to being a complete novice prior to learning vim.
All that I read suggested that knowing vim would suffice to use vi if it
were the only editor available.

It seemed the main choice of *nix editor is between emacs and vi(m); I
found emacs daunting mainly because it seemed to be capable of much more
than editing text.
