Hi, Marty

Thank you.  I resolved the problem by adding lines in 
/etc/network/interfaces:

auto ppp0
iface ppp0 inet ppp
     provider dsl-provider
     pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up 

Now eth0 is brought up automatically before dialing.
