More than likely, you need a fully configured source tree.
When I tried out VMWare last year, I figured out that was
the problem.  Incidentally, have you checkout qemu?  I am
using qemu 0.7 and it rocks.  With the jqemu GUI front end,
it is easily competitve with VMWare.
