The hostname is "debian" in both the cases

the contents of /etc/hosts is
127.0.0.1     debian     localhost
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
# (added automatically by netbase upgrade)
::1    ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

what do you mean by the session ???

One thing that has struck my notice is dmesg. please have a look how 2 eth connections are coming in the output as eth0 and eth1, when I have only 1 lan card (in slot 1) and a 56kbps modem (in slot 0) attached to my box. I cant see why the system detects 2 eth cards
