Persinally I use xfce on my Laptop. It's only a PII(?)-667 w/192Mb RAM.
{grey@mania:~} ps ux | grep xf
grey 2909 0.0 0.9 10760 1780 ? Ss Mar27 0:29
/usr/bin/xfce4-session
grey 2978 0.0 1.1 13220 2112 ? Ss Mar27 1:11 xfce-mcs-manager
grey 2982 0.0 1.3 10484 2600 ? S Mar27 1:34 xfwm4 --daemon
grey 2983 0.0 1.6 10936 3156 ? S Mar27 3:51 xftaskbar4
grey 2984 0.0 0.6 10804 1312 ? S Mar27 0:49 xfdesktop
grey 2986 0.2 2.1 12688 4176 ? S Mar27 149:10 xfce4-panel
Not sure how much of that can be culled out but it is pretty minimal and
allows me to run Firefox & Thunderbird easily with the occasional forays
into OpenOffice or other such heavier applications.
