There's a barely documented command line option on recent X servers.
If you pass "-br" (short for "black root") to the X server, the root
window will come up solid black instead of the stippled checkerboard
you're seeing.
The exact mechanics of passing "-br" to your X server will depend on
which login manager you're using, of course.
