bug? cifs.o not available in Sarge

I have Sarge from the 04/23/2005 jidgo images.

There seems to be no deb package for the cifs client,
and modconf does not list the fs/cifs module (it is
not in /lib/modules/2.4.27-2-386/kernel/fs/).

1) Is this a bug? (i.e. should cifs.o be available by
default in the distribution)

2) If not, what is the standard way to get the cifs
client?

I am already looking into building a custom kernel,
but it seems like this should be a pretty standard
feature.
