GLIBC_2.3 not found, Woody

Hi All,

After a recent update via apt by one of my technicians I found that
no-one could login to our production server.

Running Debian 3.0r5 with standard bits.

The error message from any service requiring authentication (POP3, SMTP,
SSH, console) was 
/lib/libc.so.6: GLIBC_2.3 not found (required by /lib/libpam.so.0)

If goto runlevel 1 and try to correct this apt threatens to remove
virtually all applications to meet dependencies?

Any thoughts would be appreciated
