qemu + win2k locks up machine

I am trying to install win2k over qemu from debian unstable with kernel 2.6.11.7
When the win2k installation gets around to checking the hardware my computer
locks up hard (black screen no response at all). Same behavior with kernel
2.6.11.4. Any ideas or does someone else have the same experience ? (is this a
qemu or a kernel bug or both ?).
