Hi Rogerio,
The kernel-image package contains the kernel and its related modules.
apt-get does not read or use your old .config to configure a new kernel.
Each kernel-image is created by the developer with a good choice of
built-in (the 'y' option) and extra (the 'm' option) module. It seems
the older kernel had your ethernet selected as a built-in module and
you need to locate the correct module name(s) and add it to the
/etc/modules so that upon your next reboot, the extra module is loaded
by the kernel. Most folks use the kernel-image's but there are ways
to make your own kernel. The Debian kernel-package has the 'make-kpg'
command for creating your own Debian kernel .deb.
Cheers,
Kev
