Check dmesg after you boot to see if your card was detected and initialized
properly. If your card is a PCI sound card, lspci may reveal if your card
has been properly configured by your sound driver.
Failing that, use a command line utility to play a sound, and post the
output.
By the way, you indicate you're using esd. I take it the daemon still
starts OK? If so, that's good, as it found the sound device node.
