Check the (XFree86, XF86Config-4 and) sis manpages if your chipset is
supported by the XFree86 v4.1. You will probably want to add a line like

~    BusID      "PCI:01:0:0"

to the Device Section for your video card. Additionaly check the drivers
homepage at xfree86.org for any specialities regarding your chipset. If
all else fails you can probably temporarily use the vesa driver, and in
that case I especially recommend switching to sarge (which I do in any
case).

| Linux Deb 2.2.20-idepci #1 Sat Apr 20 12:45:19 EST
| 2002 i686 unknown
Wether or not you make the switch to sarge is your decision, although
you may have to if your chipset isn't supported by the version of
XFree86 shipped with woody. But you should definitely use a newer
kernel, 2.2.20-idepci is the stock kernel used in the woody installer. Do
$ apt-cache search --names-only kernel-image | less
To find an appropriate kernel-image and then do
$ apt-get install kernel-image-x.y.z
I guess 2.4.27 should be in woody.
