Not a solution, but I think I'm having a simular problem with trying to update bsdutils.

my output from synaptic is as follows:

(Reading database ... 99922 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace bsdutils 1:2.12-7 (using .../bsdutils_1%3a2.12-10_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: warning - unable to stat old pre-removal script `/var/lib/dpkg/info/bsdutils.prerm': Permission denied
dpkg - trying script from the new package instead ...
dpkg: ... it looks like that went OK.
   Unpacking replacement bsdutils ...
   dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/bsdutils_1%3a2.12-10_i386.deb (--unpack):
unable to stat `./usr/share/man/man1/script.1.gz' (which I was about to install): Permission denied
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
dpkg (subprocess): unable to execute post-installation script: Exec format errordpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
   Errors were encountered while processing:
   /var/cache/apt/archives/bsdutils_1%3a2.12-10_i386.deb

Any suggestions, or advice would be much appreciated.
