Look for the section in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 that has a line similar to
'Driver          "mouse"' and make sure the 'Option          "Device"'
line points to something like '/dev/input/mice' instead of '/dev/psaux'.
(This may be different if you're using udev or devfs, so if it doesn't
work, please let us know if you're using one of these.)

I'm currently using a Logitech USB mouse on a Debian Sarge box with
Xfree86, so it is definitely possible for usb mice to work.
