sorry for the false cry for help, well, it wasnt false, but it is not a
debian user list problem...

we do some "fancy" password pushing to box A listed above, (rewrite
of /etc/passwd /etc/shadow, etc...) and it is this process that is
causing me heartache.

my problem has to do with the shell of the user. more info to come as i
dig deeper. (if anyone cares, that is :)
