One I'll highly recommend is the Neuros Audio II

Play's mp3's, ogg's, and wav.

Records to MP3 and WAV format from internal microphone, 
FM tuner, and line input.

Has an open source firmware.

the only thing I hate is the USB 2.0 interface. 
I would prefer ieee1394b (firewire 400 800)

It is slightly bigger than the Ipod, but it has 
more features out of the box.
