Sarge + kernel-2.6.8

Hello!

I install the Debian Sarge with first downloaded iso CD, using the
kernel-2.6.8-2-386, and then the other packages from debian.ftp.mirror.

Then I build the kernel-2.6.8 image with an initrd from the
kernel-tree-2.6.8 .

I use thereafter this new kernel to configure with it the X Window and
tha alsa sound, but with no success. But, with the first
kernel-2.6.8-2-386 I can configure alsa. I think that no difference is
between these two configurations.

What could be wrong?

Moreover, I remove accidentally the XF86Config-4 file, and I can't get it
back even with dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 !

I try apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xfree86, but the XF86Config-4
file still missing.

How can I get back the XF86Config-4 file?

Any suggestion will be appreciated!
