Hi Rick,please understand that English is not my native language (speak Perl much better :->) and so I could have misunderstood something.
We ALL 8-> know ontologies can be the way to go to build complex representations of knowledge on which automatic inferences can be made and cyc, snobase etc etc are great stuff.
I was simply suggesting wikis, having imagined the requirements the OP had, and believing that form of "knowledge logging" was the best compromise between ease of use and functionalities needed.
I believe no-one here implied artificial reasoning is no good, only maybe inappropriate to the task.
