kernel 2.6 problems (1): "No module symbols loaded"

hi folks,

trying desperately to get (any!) 2.6 kernel to work on my main machine
(mac, powerpc). scsi and usb support seem to be terminally broken,
and since I have scsi disks and usb keyboard/mouse, that makes it
pretty hard to use my computer.

in trying to diagnose the problem, I note this message in
/var/log/messages:

Mar 28 17:13:16 matts-mac kernel: Loaded 37279 symbols from /boot/System.map-2.6.11-20050328-02-fb-attempt.
Mar 28 17:13:16 matts-mac kernel: Symbols match kernel version 2.6.11.
Mar 28 17:13:16 matts-mac kernel: No module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled.
Mar 28 17:13:16 matts-mac kernel: rcvd

I've looked in my config and there are CLEARLY modules configured in
the kernel; moreover, kernel loading and unloading is also
configured. so any explanation of what else might generate this
error?

thanks,

matt
