Are you installing Woody (stable)? If your system is new Woody may not have support for it. I would only recommend stable for server environments, if this case is a workstation then use Sarge. It has later software and is more likely to support your hardware. If the system is a toy, use Sid :-D; I imagine you'd fall in love with it in no time ;-).
