Unless you're using it in a server environment, it's preferred to use testing rather than stable.

Sorry for being rude but Where is it said like that? Testing is never preferred to stable. If it is a individual preference, please say so. Debian releases only stable releases. The rest of them (testing and unstable) are processes helping towards the stable release.

Testing is perfectly stable for the end user, and protected servers. I use unstable on my desktop with little or no problems, and Sarge is more than fit for the desktop.

Right now it so happens that testing is very mature (since sarge is close to release). This does not mean that testing is 'perfectly' stable always. You might not be having any problems right now, but you can have problems in the future.

The easiest way to move to KDE 3 from stable is to move to sarge. To upgrade to sarge simply change all instances of "stable" to "testing" in /etc/apt/sources.list, and do "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade". Sarge has, last time I used it, KDE 3.1 (It may be 3.2 or something now), and unstable has 3.3; they're both fit for workstation and PC use :-) (Unstable just isn't garunteed to be that way all the time)

If at all the OP wants to do the above, I would suggest to replace stable by sarge not by "testing".

I have written a HOWTO describing the choices one need to make when changing the flavour (stable/testing/unstable) of debian distribution. It is hosted at http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/kk288/debian_choosing_distribution.html
